Full Time Enrollment

Students in the BSFS at GU-Q typically take five courses per semester and graduate in four academic years. Each course is usually equivalent to three credits, but there are some courses with different numbers of credit hours attached to them. Students are required to be enrolled on a full-time basis, which means taking a minimum of 12 credits per semester.

New Student Pre-Registration

New students at GU-Q must submit fall course requests over the summer, and these are usually due via an online form (details and exact date given each year) by mid-July.

In order to submit your course requests, you need to first do the following:

In the first fall semester, students normally take the following five courses:

  • ECON 001 Microeconomics
  • PHIL 099 Political and Social Thought, THEO 001 Problem of God or an Introductory History class (course numbers vary)
  • Arabic or French Language – If you don’t have near-fluency in a language other than English, you’ll need to enroll in either an Arabic or French language course.  
  • INAF 100 Proseminar
  • Writing (WRIT 014 or 015) 

Via the online course request form, let OCAA know the following:

  • In which second language other than English you plan to pursue proficiency at Georgetown and the approximate level of your language ability,
  • Tell us if you want PHIL 099, THEO 001 or an Intro History, and  
  • If you have any advanced or transfer credit (and submit scores to us as soon as possible for review).

Once we have your advanced or transfer credit, and once we have your writing and language placement results, we will then create a complete schedule for you, which you will receive during New Student Orientation (NSO).  Because the first semester courses are fairly set, and because we need writing and language placement results from NSO week to finalize your schedule, it’s easier for us to create your first semester’s schedule for you.  Every semester afterwards, you will be responsible for creating your own course schedules using MyAccess.

Please note that your advising dean may edit your course schedule as needed.

You can make changes to your course schedule during the add/drop period as needed.

Registration, Add/Drop, and Waitlists

Registration is usually held in the first two weeks of November for spring semester courses; the first two weeks of April for fall semester courses; and in early February for summer courses. Registration dates for specific programs like study abroad may vary, but all will be announced each year.

  • Georgetown students typically take five courses per semester and graduate in four academic years. Students are required to be enrolled on a full-time (minimum 12 credits per semester) basis.

  • Check the important dates for registration.
  • Review your degree progress in MyAccess’ Degree Audit.

During Registration, your results are processed as you submit them, so you can see immediately if you have been registered for a class or not.

Add/drop is an extended registration period – a last chance to finalize your course schedule. Your class schedule must be final by the last day of add/drop.

If a class is full, you can opt to be placed on a waitlist. Don’t assume you’ll get a seat in a class that is full. Always register for another class if you don’t get a confirmed seat in your preferred course. If you are awarded a seat from the waitlist, you’ll receive an email at your Georgetown email account. You’ll have up to 24 hours to claim the seat. If you don’t claim it, it passes to the next person on the waitlist. Waitlists are run at 3pm EST Monday to Friday, excluding university holiday days.

Withdrawing from Class and Tuition Refunds

If you need to withdraw from a class, always consult your academic advisor first. The last day to add/drop or withdraw from a course is shown on the GU-Q academic calendar. Withdrawals should be requested through MyAccess.
