What are Employers Looking For?
If we could write a list of the skills needed to be successful at work what would it look like? There are so many new jobs, technology is constantly changing, we all need to continually learn new skills - how can we keep up with these demands?
When different employers have been asked these questions they have consistently produced a list of similar skills.
Where do you stand in relation to these 'critical career skills'?
Academic Skills
These provide the foundation to get, keep and progress in a job:
- Communication - speaking, writing, listening, understanding
- Thinking – critically, logically, practically and theoretically
- Learning – lifelong, ongoing desire to improve
Personal Management Skills
- Positive attitudes and behaviors – ethical, enthusiastic and confident
- Responsibility – set goals, manage time and be accountable for actions
- Adaptability – accept changing situations, recognize and respect diversity and individual differences, identify and suggest new ideas/solutions.
Teamwork Skills
- Understanding Objectives – Be clear about the group’s goals
- Group responsibility – Understand and accept your role in the group
- Communicating and listening to ideas – Express your thoughts, ideas and opinions clearly and respect others’.
- Reaching agreement/consensus – work together to reach your common, agreed goals.
Problem Solving
- Identifying problems and coming up with different solutions
- Planning and testing different options
- Checking whether solutions have worked

- Synthesizing themes from diverse sources

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar just concluded the Georgetown Pre-College Series (GPS) which gave prospective undergraduates a taste of college life and a unique opportunity to gain valuable information on the admissions process.
