Internship Application Process
- Consult with Career Development Center as you begin the internship search process.
- Identify internships of interest. Use all resources: Internship postings with Career Development Center, newspapers Ads, self-search, etc.
- Always apply to more than one internship using the application form.
- Pay close attention to the application requirements:
- Prepare a professional resume. See the Career Development Center Resume Writing Handout for more information.
- Always include a cover letter.
- Ask professors, supervisors, etc. if they will serve as references for you. Sometimes an employer will want to talk with your references before they hire you. If reference letters are required, obtain them.
- If required, request transcripts from the registrar’s office.
- Prepare a portfolio of work samples (e.g., writing samples)
- Complete the Internship Agreement Form and hand it back along with all the other paper work to The Career Development Center
- Prepare for interviews. Consult the Career Development Center Interviewing Handout and/or the career counselor.
- ALWAYS send thank you letters to interviewers and to those people who have helped you in the search.
- Carefully choose the right internship for you. Don’t be in a hurry to accept an offer. After you have accepted an offer, remove yourself from consideration with other organizations.
- Complete the Internship Learning Agreement with your Site Supervisor on your first day of internship. The ILA outlines the academic and site-related goals and requirements for the internship. PLEASE NOTE: If the Internship Learning Agreement is not completed and returned to The Career Development Center by the designated date you will not be allowed to continue with the internship.
