Earlier this month GU-Q participated in the first joint Education City Career Fair hosted by Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) for Education and Science and Community Development. This was the first Education City- wide career fair initiative which was held for two days at Hamad bin Khalifa University Student Center in partnership with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar and Northwestern University in Qatar. The career fair attracted over 800 students and alumni and more than 90 Qatar-based employers from public and private sectors.

Sandy Kim, Career Services Manager at Georgetown University said that the Education City Career Fair was a win-win situation for both the students and the employers. “The event was a great collaborative effort as all of the Education City students had a chance to meet with top employers from various sectors and career fields over the course of two days.”

Offering a student’s perspective on the event, GU-Q junior Deena Newaz said that she visited the Education City Career Fair because she realized the interaction with the employers at the career fair benefited her job search. “I found the interaction with the employers at the career fair last year very helpful which is why I attended the fair again this year. I have met a number of great employers this year who are offering students the type of opportunities which I am looking for,” she said.

Sponsored by Qatar Shell, this year’s Education City Career Fair provided a platform for students to meet with employers in an informal setting and learn more about job and internship opportunities offered by companies, government agencies and non-profit organizations in Qatar.

A representative from one of the employers which has actively taken part in GU-Q-organized career fairs in previous years commented on this year’s event by saying that “a joint EC Career Fair provides a larger potential pool of candidates for employers like Booz Allen, but also gives students the opportunity to explore a non-traditional career path. Overall caliber of students seem to be rising and we certainly look forward to meeting more qualified candidates in the future,” noted William Cha, Senior Consultant at Booz Allen.

Most organizations that took part at the Education City Career Fair demonstrated high level of interest in students from a broad range of disciplines.
