SFS-Qatar Students at MUN Conference
“The SFS-Qatar MUN shows how SFS-Qatar provides more than just a degree. It is an academic institution that provides learning experiences where young people reflect on current issues”, says Zainab Elfil, from Class of 2011. SFS-Qatar curriculum takes learning outside of the classroom. Our students’ participation at Model United Nations (MUN) Conference is one of the ways that they put theoretical learning into practice.
Center for International and Regional Studies (CIRS) hosts annual MUN Conferences, bringing high school students together from around the world. This is a great opportunity for these students to engage in discussions on international affairs with their peers from different countries. Along with helping in the organization of the event, SFS-Qatar students benefit from this experience by gaining new perspectives and developing leadership skills.
MUN Participants voice a diverse range of perspectives. “It was interesting for us to have high school students to come to us from different cultures” says Zainab. The diversity of the participants matches well with the variety of places that SFS-Qatar students come from. “[Participants] too were amazed by the diverse and different cultures we have here in SFS-Qatar.
It is not an easy task to orchestrate different voices for a Committee Chair. However, it is a great chance to build moderating and leadership skills. Co-Chair of the African Union Committee, Nada Soudy says “I learned how to be confident and in control.” Similarly, Nabil Gaber Al Nashar, Chair of Press Committee, sees it as a great opportunity to be a mediator. Reflecting upon his experience at the conference, he had to respond to the allegations that the Press Committee was misrepresenting the chairs. According to Nabil, “this opened [his] eyes to the relationship between people in authority and the press.” MUN provides the chance for SFS-Qatar students to put leadership in practice.
Through this and many other activities, SFS-Qatar students are able to complement their curricular education with practical knowledge.
