Focus on Faculty: Candith Pallandre

Candith PallandreCandith Pallandre joined the SFS-Qatar team for its start-up in the Fall of 2005, and has taught ENFL 114, an intensive writing course for Freshmen, and Introductory French. She also coordinates the Writing and Learning Center, providing tutoring services on an individual basis and organizing workshops for academic skills. She has seen incredible growth and accomplishments in the first three years: “I will always remember one of my first “meetings” here in August 2005. It took place far out in the waters of the Persian Gulf, at night, alongside a dhow fishing boat, and while we cooled off we planned the beginning stages of the Writing and Learning Center”.

Professor Pallandre is a Board member of Qatar Tesol, a local professional organization for the teaching of English as a Second Language, and has organized a yearly conference at Georgetown which encourages first-time presenters from local primary and secondary schools as well as universities. Currently she is involved in an outreach partnership sponsored by CIRS. Professor Pallandre travels weekly to an Independent Primary School for Girls located north of Doha to meet with teachers, discuss their changing roles in a reform-focused school system, and promote fluency and confidence in their use of English.

Professor Pallandre has been a member of the Faculty and Staff Life Committee for two years. This group seeks ways to stimulate intellectual interaction between the five (soon to be six) branch campuses at Education City, and has sponsored a variety of events to bring the Education City universities together.

Professor Pallandre will return to main campus for the Fall semester of 2008 to continue teaching in the Center for Language Education and Development. She has first-hand views of the country-wide development that is taking place, the Education City initiatives and role in these changes, and the dynamic contribution of Georgetown SFS-Qatar at all levels. “Working on the Admissions Committee has been a wonderful way to see first hand the strengths and varied backgrounds of our students here at SFS-Qatar. They will be at the forefront of the changes taking place in Qatar, and it is a wonderful experience to work with them”
