Culture and Politics Major Requirements
The Culture and Politics (CULP) major explores the theories, methodologies and vocabulary essential to understanding the construction of political and cultural identities. The major also introduces them to the ways in which these constructions may be investigated and subjected to critical analysis. CULP students examine the contextual conditions under which social and cultural knowledge is created and transmitted and how power accrues in these processes. As an alternative to the more policy-oriented focus of the International Politics major, the Culture and Politics major builds naturally from the multidisciplinary nature of the SFS core curriculum. CULP students acquire a language to understand an increasingly multicultural world as critical thinkers and informed theoreticians of the relationship between culture, society and politics.
The Culture and Politics major requires students to take:
- Introduction to Culture and Politics (CULP 043 or 044);
- Three courses from an approved list of CULP humanities courses;
- Three courses from an approved list of CULP social sciences courses;
- Five courses relevant to a topical concentration selected by the student.
