International Politics Major Requirements
In the International Politics (IPOL) major, students learn how nations and non-state actors alike cooperate and compete on a broad range of political, security, and strategic issues. In an increasingly complex international system, governmental leaders and international affairs experts must understand the interlocking political forces and motivations influencing foreign affairs policy. Policy makers must also understand how a host of non-political issues--including economic forces and developmental challenges, religious and ethnic divisions, and the distribution of natural resources—affect political responses. The organization of the major addresses the principal building blocks of international politics today, and students who elect this major often pursue careers in diplomacy, security studies, international organizations, and international law.
In order to satisfy the requirements for the BSFS degree, students must complete Quantitative Methods for International Politics (IPOL 320) and any 10 courses that have been approved for the International Politics major program. Students may select IPOL courses that focus upon subjects such as:
- International Law
- International Institutions
- Ethics & Human Rights
- Diplomacy & Statecraft
- International Security
- Trans-national Actors & Forces
- Diplomatic History
- International Political Economy
