Abdullah Al-Arian is a doctoral candidate in the Department of History at Georgetown University. His research interests include modern Islamic history, social movements, Islamic law and society, Islam and globalization, and the history of US policy toward the Muslim world.
He received his MSc in sociology of religion from the London School of Economics, where he wrote his dissertation on the history of American Muslim political institutions. He has worked as a research assistant at the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim Christian Understanding at Georgetown, working on such projects as the recent reissue of Islam in Transition (Oxford Press, 2007). He graduated from Duke University with a dual BA in political science and comparative area studies along with a history minor. His doctoral dissertation examines the rise of religious social movements in Sadat era Egypt.
