SFS-Qatar Sets the Stage for Summer with Planet Georgetown Program

Planet Georgetown LogoLater this month, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Qatar) will host its second annual Planet Georgetown summer enrichment series for youth from local independent schools throughout Qatar. This year’s summer programs, taking place June 28th through July 9th and July 19th through July 30th, will focus on peace and conflict resolution and global humanitarian and conservation efforts.

“Planet Georgetown is a unique and fun way for students to learn about the world through hands-on geography and language activities, writing exercises, sports, and art projects,” said Emily Wilson, Planet Georgetown Program Coordinator.

During the first camp in the series, “Partners in Peace,” rising preparatory and secondary students will take a virtual trip through South Africa, Chile, Ireland, China and Rwanda, exploring peace efforts made amongst regional conflicts. Through curriculum designed by staff and undergraduates of SFS-Qatar, participants will investigate what it means to promote a culture of peace. In their second week, students will work in teams to research and develop creative nonviolent solutions to current international conflicts of their choosing.

Younger students, going into grades six and seven, will also have an opportunity to participate in Planet Georgetown’s internationally-themed programming. “I Love My Planet,” the second camp in the Planet Georgetown series, will focus on efforts different countries are making to address poverty and environmental concerns. In the second half of the program, students will put their studies to the test as they work together to create their own imaginary nations and governments – complete with unique native languages, cultures, currencies, and more.

Limited spaces for independent school students, going into grades six through ten, remain. For more information, visit the Planet Georgetown blog at www.planetgeorgetown.com or contact Program Coordinator Emily Wilson at sfsqenrichment@georgetown.edu.
