SFS-Qatar to host Summer College Preview Program
This summer, SFS-Qatar will open its doors to high school students who wish to prepare themselves for university life. The Summer College Preview Program (SCPP) is a four-week, joint program between the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar Foreign Service in Qatar and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar.
All students will take courses in math, English, and test preparation. Additionally, students will be given the opportunity to learn more about the university learning environment by exposure to the dynamic curricula of CMUQ and SFS-Qatar.
“It’s a good way to learn about what International Affairs really is,” said Gehan Samarah, Associate Director of Admissions at SFS-Qatar. “At the same time, the SCPP will show students the difference between being a secondary school student and a university student.” SFS-Qatar plans to offer introductions to government, economics, politics and diplomacy among other subjects. In the diplomacy portion of the program, students will analyze conflicts, learn effective negotiation skills, have the chance to benefit from the knowledge of ambassadors residing in Doha, and participate in simulations of the Model United Nations (MUN). “We aim to be a forum for students to practice diplomacy and develop leadership skills, but perhaps more importantly to learn from and to listen to one another”, said Kathryn King, coordinator for SFS-Qatar MUN.
“Georgetown is already reaching out to students in primary and preparatory schools in Qatar with the Planet Georgetown summer program and International Days throughout the year,” said Liz Kepferle, Director of Admissions. “We look forward to the addition of the secondary school level in our summer program roster as a complement to our ongoing secondary school outreach focused on admissions and Model United Nations.”
Interested high school students in SCCPP must apply by April 1.
