SFS-Qatar Celebrates the Conclusion of its Fourth Model United Nations Conference

Doha, Qatar - On Sunday, February 1, the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Qatar) concluded its Fourth Annual Model United Nations (MUN) Conference with a diplomatic lunch at the Marriott.

The lunch brought together the 350 MUN student participants from 36 countries with diplomatic delegations to Qatar from 15 countries. The lunch was crowned by an awards ceremony which honored outstanding delegates as nominated by the chairs and co-chairs of their respective committees.

In the three-day international UN simulation, the high school students where divided into 9 committees representing international governing bodies such as the UN Security Council, the African Union, NATO and the Arab League. Each student assumed the role of a member country delegate on the governing body of his or her committee. SFS-Qatar students served as Chairs and Co-chairs of the committees.

Brendan Hill, Associate Dean of Student Affairs at SFS-Qatar considers this year’s MUN Conference as the best so far. “We had tremendous diversity, the best quality of participants and most active chaperones,” he said.

Throughout the conference, the students participated in sessions where they discussed a variety of pressing topics issues in the global arena. After the final session, each committee held a final debrief where high school counselors and subject experts from Education City universities provided a critique and evaluation of the discussions and the resulting resolutions.

For many of the SFS-Qatar student chair members, this year’s conference is their last. Senior students like Dana Kahlout (SFS ’09) have been actively involved in the Annual SFS-Qatar MUN Conference since its launch in 2005. Kahlout particularly appreciated the enthusiasm of this year’s high school participants. “Their excitement exceeded their anxiety. They expressed themselves very well during the committee sessions,” she said.
