Finding an Internship on Your Own

Finding an internship is a time consuming activity. It is suggested that you start the process at least a semester prior to the semester in which you would like to intern. It is also important to note that the more competitive internships require you apply 3-4 months prior to the semester of the internship. Starting early will help you get the internship you really want!

Many organizations may be willing to offer an internship, but do not have a formal program. Using your research and networking skills, and some assertiveness, you may be able to create your "dream" internship. Assertively pursuing your ideal internship can be intimidating, but can lead to great success. The basic steps to creating your internship include:

  • Know yourself -- Assess and understand your interests, skills, values, and preferences for work environment.
  • Identify & Research industries that may be a good match for you. Within these industries, identify organizations of interest through: online research, networking, professional associations, the Yellow Pages, Bayt.com website, etc.
  • Research the organization(s) of interest (e.g., company Web site)
  • Contact the organization(s) using your network to identify a key player in the organization.
    • Prepare a 20-second script to introduce yourself and to let them know why you are calling.
    • Don't ask, "Do you have any internships available?"
    • Do ask, "I'd like to talk with you about the possibility of doing an internship with your organization.". Explain what an internship entails.
    • Carpe diem. If you're really interested in an internship, but your qualifications aren't quite right, apply anyway and stress your real interest. Many organizations would rather have a truly excited and motivated intern than one who just meets the qualifications on paper.
  • Take experience over money. You can always earn money; however, the window of opportunity for internships isn't open eternally. If you're really broke, consider taking a part-time job in order to work at the internship you really want.
